Ukraine’s entry into the WTO by the fall of 2008?

“Ukraine’s entry to the WTO under the most favourable conditions can be only completed by the fall of 2008. By June 2008, it is expect that Ukraine will complete the whole preparatory process. Then, if the General WTO Council ratifies the agreement on Ukraine’s entry into the WTO at the beginning of autumn, Ukraine would become a member of the WTO member 30 days later”, - stated the official representative of Ukraine of the WTO headquarters, Volodymyr Balyta.

According to the Press office, after a meeting of the working group scheduled for February 2008, a special addendum to the agreement will be prepared containing commitments on tariffs for goods, schemes on market access for services and limits on financial support for rural areas. At the same time, on condition that Ukraine agrees with the WTO as to the above mentioned issues in March, the tariff commitments implemented will be scrutinized over a two month period while the final version of the report will be made ready by the end April 2008. Afterwards, the final report review will take a month and another two weeks to arrange for a meeting of the General WTO Council.

At the same time, it was announced that entry negotiations are considered complete only when the last member of the working group has signed a bilateral agreement- yet; no such an agreement has been signed with Kirghizia.
