European parliament supports resolution for Ukraine to become EU member

The majority of deputies from the European Parliament voted for the resolution. The speaker, European deputy from Poland Michael Kaminski, stated that by approving the resolution the European Parliament didn’t close the door on Ukraine. The majority of speakers supported the idea that Ukraine should be more active in conducting reforms, fighting against corruption, etc. Only two speakers of the thirty, deputies from Germany Elmar Brok and Michael Galer were opposed to the resolution of the European Parliament.

The EU Commissioner on science and research, Janez Potochnik was present at the debates presenting the position of the European Commission towards Ukraine as following: “Our goal in our negotiations with Ukraine is to have them move closer to the EU as closer as possible in as many sectors as possible. We cannot predict
in advance what are the probabilities for future cooperation between the EU and Ukraine.

The resolution of the European Parliament is only in the form of a recommendation.
