EU extended cooperation
During a working visit to Portugal, Deputy-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andriy Veselovskiy met with the Portugal’s State Secretary for European Affairs in the Foreign Ministry, Manuel Lobo Antunes. At the meeting, they discussed the current situation and the prospects for the development of relations between Ukraine and European Union since in the near future the presidency of the EU is Portugal’s (effective the 1st of July 2007).
A.Veselovskiy announced that Ukraine’s foreign policy priorities remain unchanged and are focused on the broadening of their collaboration with the EU and the preparation of a new enhanced agreement between Ukraine and the EU. On Portugal part, the State Secretary requested that the Deputy-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine report on the current political situation in the country, emphasizing that Ukraine must be prepared to effectively host the summit “Ukraine – EU” on September, 14th of this year in Kyiv.
M. Lobo Antunes, in turn, assured the Ukrainian side that during Portugal’s EU presidency, relations between Ukraine and the EU will change and stated that Portugal has already initiated preparation for the upcoming summit Ukraine-EU, which, in his opinion, should deliver concrete results.
